What to consider before ordering fitted wardrobes

A bedroom interior used to illustrate fitted wardrobe planning.

Fitted wardrobes are at their best when they are designed around the clothes you own and the shape of the wall, including the parts a freestanding robe cannot use.

Count the hanging before you choose the doors

Separate long hanging, shirts and shelves. A wall of doors looks calm, but the inside has to match what you actually store. Shoe shelves and drawers are easier to plan now than to add later.

Look at the architecture

Alcoves, eaves, chimneys and the swing of the bedroom door all change the carcass. Made-to-measure wardrobes are useful precisely because those conditions are rarely square or standard.

Door style should suit the bedroom you want to sleep in. A painted door can disappear into the wall; a timber finish can make the wardrobe part of the furniture. Either is a design choice, not a default.
